Where does the name "1 MOA Texas" come from? MOA is Minute Of Angle, which is used to determine how large of a circle in diameter a rifle will shoot rounds (a "group"). Typically, it is based upon a minimum of three rounds. 1 MOA means that at 100 yards, a rifle will have a shot grouping of 1 inch or less.
My objective as your instructor is to assist you in attaining the proficiency to achieve that 1 MOA with your rifle, or it's a pistol, to have you able to place rounds on top of each other on the target. Also referred to as the firearm being a "tack driver" or "nail driver".
And why is Texas in the name? Because although I wasn't born here, I am proud and privileged to be here. God bless Texas!
Firearms proficiency is a skill. And like other skills, people learn them in ways unique to them. The reason I bring this up is to assure you that I will be working WITH you, not AT you. What I mean by that is we will take the time to determine how you best absorb and effectively implement the training and instruction. We've all heard the adage "Fast is slow, slow is smooth, smooth is fast". There's a lot of truth in that, obviously. In my experience, people learn the most effectively when they are confident and comfortable (relaxed). My responsibility as an instructor is to adapt my training and instruction to YOU, making sure that you are solidly grasping the material, and we're going at a pace that best suits you.
***FOR THOSE WITH ANY AMOUNT OF ANXIETY ABOUT FIREARMS***
Let me say, you are not alone. I have heard from many people who would love to take a firearms class, go to a firearms range, or even just feel confident about shooting a firearm. Yet they feel intimidated due to their lack of knowledge and skill. NOT a problem! As your instructor, I will not "throw you in the deep end".
1 MOA Texas has a variety of inert (non-firing) firearms that will allow you to acquaint yourself with a firearm while gaining confidence.
The typical progression is to start with a SIRT pistol, then move up to a Laser Shot pistol. Once confidence is achieved, we then move on to a Laser Shot pistol with recoil. After that process, my students have had no problem with confidently and effectively firing a "real" pistol.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
As stated before, I am blessed to reside in Texas. The saying "I wasn't born here, but I got here as quick as I could!" comes to mind.
I am a US Army Infantry veteran (NOT a combat veteran, all due respect to those who are), and I grew up in Eastern Oregon. My father retired after 27 years as an Oregon State Trooper, so yes, I'm a cop's kid.
I have a passion for helping others, and being a firearms instructor is one component of that. Being at a firearms range and seeing frustrated, ineffective, and inefficient shooters is frustrating for me. Having been one of them long ago, I committed to maximizing my skills, and learning how to pass that on to others. We will both benefit from seeing your progress!
